When I was a kid, I spent a lot more time in fiction than in reality.”

Trixi was my hero growing up, the Maria to my Marta — down to my siblings and I singing “Do Re Mi” with her in Austria. But life isn’t a movie, and when my siblings and I turned on her it wasn’t in the beginning when she was some stranger, but at the end, when she failed to live up to the impossible expectations of wonder and attentiveness Julie Andrews set in our minds. We betrayed Trixi, and to this day I’m mortified by what we did. But I’d be lying if I said nothing good came from it.
